A San Benito man was arrested Tuesday on charges of cocaine possession.

Richard Randy Reza, 25, of San Benito was arrested for allegedly concealing two baggies of cocaine and 18 hydrocodone pills in his back pocket during a routine traffic stop.

Reza was driving a maroon Chevy Malibu when he was pulled over for what police said were several traffic violations. According to a San Benito Police Department (SBPD) news release, the officer who conducted the traffic stop was alerted when Reza allegedly attempting to conceal something in his back pocket.

After given consent to search the vehicle and Reza’s person, the officer reportedly found the aforementioned amounts of cocaine and hydrocodone pills that weren’t prescribed to the suspect.

Finally? Class of 2005 is that what you’ve been hoping for, being of the same year you must have know him. The mighty never fall, just like any other human being he has faced issues in his personal life that haven’t been so easy to overcome! He gave pride to the city of San Benito & your right it gained him nothin but lifelong pain from the injuries he received, rest assured the MIGHTY such as Randy never fall!

A GREAT WARRIOR from an awesome family, who likes to party with cocaine and downers that got caught…How ironic…Hope this young man realizes the shame and consequences that come with the territory now…:-(

  1. Again, Rudy, the information you would have us print is not relevant to the article. We cannot speak for the Valley Morning Star, but I can tell you that the San Benito News would not focus entire stories on the family of a kidnapping suspect on the mere basis of relation. In fact, of the two newspapers I’m proud that this is the publication that practices as much. Now if the family was believed to somehow be involved in the crime, obviously that would be of relevance.

Below is the only story the San Benito News reported on the McDonalds kidnapping case. Never was a follow up story done and never mention of police searching for the son of San Benito City Commissioner Tony Gonzales. Why? Favoritism?

For some reason the San Benito News never reported on the El Ranchito Man linked to the Harlingen McDonalds kidnapping. The other newspaper reported the whole story on their front page. hmmmmmmmmm Was it because the accused is the son of San Benito City Commissioner Tony Gonzales??? And don’t tell us that the SB News didn’t get word of it. Explain that Mr. Editor!!!

Excuses, excuses, we must take responsability for our actions. It’s unfortunate that there is always an excuse. Deal with your problem and move on.

  2. You lost me on the mayor.

Assuming that you’re implying we only now decided to print these types of stories, below you will find links to 11 articles reporting various arrests – three of which are drug-related – and all occurring before the suspect in this story was arrested.

Again, this is nothing new, Unanswered questions.

  3. At least the mayor is getting a break. Wink! Wink!

It is somewhat ironic that suddenly such importance was placed on such stories after this one story.

    Have a wonderful evening!

  4. I am more than certain that multiple individuals in San Benito are arrested on a daily basis for narcotics, DWI, PI, etc and I doubt they all make the front page. Just saying!!!!

    1. You bet they do, at least the ones that are brought to our attention. Just check out today’s front page. There’s two such stories on there now.

  5. Mr. Reza suffered a massive football injury on the field, while he played for the San Benito Greyhounds. This injury has caused him a great deal of pain and anguish; he has been self medicating the pain. The injury he obtained was severe enough to require surgery, that he has yet to receive.

I agree with some individuals on here that feel passing judgement is not what one should do, we all make mistakes and face obstacles in life that we eventually overcome. He WILL overcome these obstacles because he does have the support, love, and strength to surpass this.

In addition, every newspaper has the ability to publish what they feel is relevant information for the public to know. It is clear that San Benito News feels this is relevant information to publish, which on the contrary I feel it is defamation of character and does tarnish the image of the city and Randy. Unfortunately, we are not perfect!!!!! I would have to agree with one of the individuals on here that posted that the “editor” or “newspaper” knew that he was a former quarterback because we all know that San Benito emphasizes, promotes, and focuses on football in their news reporting. I am sure during Randy’s time in high school his name was all over this same newspaper.

I do find it a bit bothersome that others dwell on ones misfortunes, without knowing all the facts. Please remember that we all have loved ones and one day this could be you or one of your loved ones. Randy will overcome this and has the support he does need that all these negative comments are dust in the wind.

Strength is developed by all the hardships that we face, not surrendering is what develops our strengths. This hardship that Randy is facing will make him stronger than ever. The best thing that all of you can do is provide optimism, wisdom, and words of support. Please keep all your negative thoughts and comments in your own negative body and drown yourself in your own misery.

    1. Look up what defamation really is and I assure you that you’ll feel differently, Unanswered questions. Consider that what you’re suggesting is to withhold information from the public concerning narcotics arrests because the accused happened to be a well-known football player. We term that as special treatment. I hope that’s not what you suggest newspapers practice. If it is, then we’re going to have to agree to disagree on what is relevant information and what isn’t.

Editor, I’m sure you knew who Reza was immediately when you saw his name coming from the police report. Instead you chose to print “Man Arrested for Cocaine Possession” as if nobody knows who Reza is. Reza became a household name in San Benito and in the RGV when he played football in 2004. And to me that is relevant to the story. You bet it is. Do we have to do the reporting for you guys??

    1. Please read my initial response to your first comment as it still answers your questions.

  6. I understand that a reporter from another local newspaper considers the publishing of stories like these and how we were made aware of them as an indication that news must be “slow” for us right now. On the contrary, and judging by the interest shown not only in the comments here but in the feedback we’ve been receiving, we’re at the forefront of providing San Benito news like only the San Benito News can. Consider, also, that this story wouldn’t have come to our attention if it wasn’t for the accessibility of reports and press releases now provided by the City of San Benito on its website.

    So there.

    ClassOf01,

Your ridiculous misinterpretation of my post and your piss poor attempt to sound educated was so defined that you did not even have to post your ClassOf01 name for us to know when you graduated. Haha!

The mere fact that you did not understand my analogy of the “Option” play , that Reza articulated to perfection in 05 alongside Ernie Tamez proves my statement clearly.

Sincerely, someone without a college degree

Classof03- What does football have anything to do with this featured story? Seriously? “Put ourselves in his cleats”? “Option?” Fact of the matter is, yes his high school career was one of the best San Benito has seen BUT that is all over with now. Its what you do after high school that defines who you are as a person and the decisions you make after high school. From my knowledge he did not go to play any College ball at any D1 D2 school much less a smaller university. The point is this, yes we feel bad for the guy because you always want to see succesful people continue to succeed. He has made some bad decisions and hopefully he can turn this around but at the rate hes going it wont stop. But just because he was a good athlete in a small city doesnt mean in your book he has achieved all his goals and dreams. Although many San Benitians think in these terms (sad) there is more to life after small time football. How about get a college degree** for one??
** College degree- A certificate awarded to those college students who have met required curriculam in order to achieve their major which in return MAKE THE BIG BUCKS!!! (for those whom never heard the term lol)
    To the editor,
Great story, you would have gotten heat for mentioning his high school highlights anyways so good choice in NOT mentioning it…

Correct class of 03, if Randy fights back with the tanacity that he did on that field then he shoudl have no problem coming back from this and turining his life around. Everyone makes mistakes, no-one is perfect. Let’s pray that Randy has a good foundation and a good support group who will help him through this.

First of all, this is a local newspaper, not TMZ, so the fact that he is a former star quarterback is irrelevant to the story. In fact, with the town as small as it is, publishing the story in such a manner is grounds for a possible defamation of character lawsuit.

As for Reza, though disappointed, there must be some bit of compassion for a man who put his heart on the field, brought joy to an entire town, and then had everything stripped from him with 1 single play.
Now, in no way, shape, or form do I condone his behavior, just merely pointing out the fact that you as a reader must put yourself in his cleats before passing judgement.

Everybody takes falls in their life, and everyone has the “Option” to get back up.
And if Reza does with the Option what he did on the field, hell make the right decision.

Thats what San Benito sports is about. Cover up is what SB sports is about.

  7. Rudy, understand that the story is about the charges brought against him and not about his high school football career from eight years ago. There are many arrests we report in which the accused may have played for the Greyhounds at one time, but what would actually be “poor reporting” is if we were to make such information a focal point of the articles.

You say poor reporting? I suppose the police report and article should be about Reza as one of the best quarterbacks ever? How absurd is that?

You are missing the point here. I’m sorry…but a 10-0 season is nothing compared to a life that has been ruined due to drugs. He is obviously setting a bad example to everyone that knows him here in S.B. I’m glad he got caught, just like any other criminal, and now he has to pay the consequences.
So Rudy Rodriiguez, I feel sorry for you. Instead of blaming the newspaper for poor reporting you should be blaming yourself for not helping this young man, if you know him.
