Commissioners OK tax hike, multi-unit water fees approved

penniesSan Benito City Commissioners have passed not only a property tax increase designed to generate additional revenues to fix city streets but also water fees to be imposed on multi-unit homes and RV parks.

The property tax hike, also known as Ordinance No. 2489, was voted on unanimously during a regular city meeting Tuesday. Commissioner Joe D. Gonzalez made the first motion and Mayor Pro-Tem Antonio G. Gonzales made the second, thus increasing the property tax rate by 4 percent and costing property owners in the city an additional $.04 of taxation per $100 valuation.

Commissioner Gonzalez attempted to add two conditions to the tax – one was that printed obligation of the loan be required with the rate, and the other being that 100 percent of the funds garnered from the tax hike be used strictly for street repairs. Finance Director Susan Crabtree, however, said the former was not possible.

  1. Travel Budget? Go where, See who, Learn what? Travel buget better be for the elderly citzens who need transportion durig hurricanes. As far as tax increases to fix city streets they better become a new age administration and start with the drainage first because past city commissions may have tried to fix only the streets with the same results. Remember it will be standing water that will damage city streets not to mention citizens homes, cars, and property. Buy Insurance ya, but look at the time wasted….. have fun being good and remember who you represent .

Dissappointed…. typical small town govt. Let things fall apart then tax the citizens. Speaking of taxes I hope the mayor reads this.
“Bite the bullett” ” we have to start somewhere” the goal is to make it appear like things were accomplished during their tenure so they’ll get re-elected.
the reward is the self serving title and prestige …never mind the citizens that pay taxes .. on another note with a hefty salary you would think our city mangers know the laws regarding eviction, or water billing

I guess what the media reported in the past editions that the taxpayers were about to be hit from all sides was in fact the “undisputed truth” and not “misinformation”!

Now that the City Commission has approved the ordinances, beginning October 1, 2012, the citizens of San Benito will be hit with a $.04 per $100 valuation property tax increase, an additional $1.50 residential and $2.75 commercial monthly surcharge to pay for the new stormwater program, and an increase in water rates.

The City Commission also approved a $20,000 international travel budget fund. “Spring Time in Paris” sounds good.

    Thanks San Benito!
