Marcus Lowery2A solid 30 seconds of cheers resounded at Bobby Morrow Stadium at just after 10 a.m. on Tuesday as Marcus David Lowery, 21, stepped onto the football field to be honored by the San Benito Greyhounds, with Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Spencer Gantt by his side.

Gantt addressed Lowery, a senior at San Benito High School and an avid fan of the ’Hounds, by saying, “You’ve obviously been our number one fan. I remember the first day I met you in the cafeteria. You knew my name and my position. I accused the superintendent of giving out information because you even knew my birthday.” The crowd laughed as Gantt continued, “You knew every player, every number. You knew their positions.”

Teresa Cantu, director of special education for San Benito CISD, described Marcus as a child with autism. “He functions very well. He, of course, is very into the consistent routines of the day,” she said, referencing the tendency for some with Autism to flourish underneath the umbrella of structure and consistency. She added, “This (ceremony) is completely out of his routine, and had it been anything else interrupting his routine he wouldn’t have been good with it.”

Wonderful story on this young man. He always has a smile and treats you with a sincere hand shake. Your are right Terry, they should also honor Beto. He is a true Greyhound fan. I don’t know how he gets to the out of town games, but he is there. We need more stories like this. One that would make a good one is on Mrs. Huff. She always (everyday) feeds cats by the Water Mill on Hwy. 77 close to the Resaca. You should print a story on her. She usually goes around 1:30 or late in the afternoon.

  1. Even if my favorite teams are the Pitt Steelers, Green Bay Packers, and the Detriot Lions. My favorite players Dick Butkus and Barry Sanders and my favorite coach Vince Lambardi I can barley wipe my tears with my hand because my biceps mucles get the way of reaching my eyes, this is a wonerful story and I bet Marcus would mean in the language of football a man with a big heart.
With all kidding aside this is a great story and actions by a great team and thier coach. It makes the clouds up above break open and let the sun shine through. Good luck on Friday have fun and play your hearts out.
