After a historic season that saw the Greyhounds advance to the third round of the playoffs for just the fifth time in the last 25 years, the individual accolades have poured in at an equally historic rate. Despite finishing as the runner up in District 32-6A, an astonishing 32 Greyhound players received some form of post-season recognition.
Leading the way for San Benito, as he did through most of the season, was workhorse running back Fabian Garcia. The junior was one of the most productive offensive players in the entire state, rushing for 2,230 and 29 touchdowns on 221 carries. Even more impressive, Garcia was able to post 1,057 yards and 11 touchdowns in just five district games, earning the title of Offensive Player of the Year for 32-6A.
Joining Garcia at the top of the awards list was defensive captain Mariano Garcia. The senior linebacker was a menace to opposing offenses this year, racking up 127 tackles with 26 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks. For his efforts, Mariano was named Defensive Player of the Year in 32-6A.
Rounding out the top award recipients was senior offensive lineman Frank Medina. Serving as a captain for one of the most aggressive unit in the Valley, Medina was named Co-Offensive Lineman of the Year by opposing coaches. The San Benito offensive line was the cornerstone of the entire team, paving the way for an eye popping 4,006 rushing yards and 51 scores on the ground.
In addition to claiming three of the most prestigious awards 32-6A has to offer, the ’Hounds saw a district leading 10 players claim first team all-district honors. San Benito’s stingy defense had the majority of selections with free safety DeAnthony Mireless leading the way as a unanimous selection.
Defensive linemen Robert Trevino, Karmyne Castilleja, and Nova Bejaran also made the list, with linebacker Danny Cavazos rounding out the first team defenders.
Offensively, receivers Rodney Rodriguez and Ricky Perez were joined by tight end Chris Thrailkill as first team performers Offensive Tackle Jose Martinez was also recognized as a top performer and return specialist Homer Quiroz was the 10th and final athlete to make the cut for San Benito.
