LA FERIA—The Lady ’Hounds’ varsity basketball team continued its head turning start to the season by capturing its first tournament championship last week.

San Benito turned in a dominant performance at La Feria’s annual Tommy Wiseman Tournament, going 4-0 with victories over Roma, Sharyland, La Feria, and Pioneer. In addition to some spectacular individual offensive performances, San Benito tormented opponents with its high pressure defense, allowing a paltry 22 points per game during the three-day tournament.

It didn’t take long for the Lady ’Hounds to assert themselves as one of the most talented teams in the tournament as sophomore sensation Angelina Reyes lit up the Roma Lady Gladiators with 35 points and nine steals in the opening game. Senior point guard Ava Garza added 18 points, five rebounds, and five steals of her own as San Benito cruised to an 83-32 victory.

After their victory, the Lady ’Hounds advanced to play Sharyland just one hour later. While the contest with the Lady Rattlers was more of a fight, San Benito was able to rely on a suffocating defensive effort, holding Sharyland to just eight of 35 from the field.

Reyes again led the way with her 10 points and seven rebounds.

On day two, San Benito faced the hosting La Feria Lady Lions for a chance to advance to the championship round. La Feria was fresh off a 20-point beat down of Harlingen South with all the momentum in the world, but it didn’t mean much to the streaking Lady ’Hounds.

Fueled by another offensive explosion by Reyes, who put up 24 points, nine rebounds, and three steals, San Benito advanced with a 54-16 victory in a game the Lady ’Hounds led from start to finish.
