Street conditions are undoubtedly one of the most talked about issues within the local community. Debates over which streets need more attention than others can constantly be found across message boards all over the internet. Well, now there’s another street causing some well-deserved debate.  Utex Drive, a city owned street in the Industrial Park area, which lies directly in front of the SBCISD’s facilities complex, has been pothole-ridden for years, causing several complaints from employees regarding the wear and tear on their vehicles.

Keep the pressure on them SB News. We know how slow the people at city hall work. Over and over we have heard the “meeting pending story”. How about posting their salaries because we certainly aren’t getting our tax paying dollars worth. Could you investigate why Coke St. is being redone when it wasn’t as bad of shape as S.Resaca Dr. which is one block down. S. Resaca Dr. is terrible ,it’s like a trail by the trail. Mayor Sanchez where are you? help!

      Don’t blame Mayor Sanchez!

The order of the streets to be repaired were voted on before she was elected. Even that order was modified or altered by members of the City Commission when “recommendations” were made to repair streets that were not even on the list. I have witnessed “street names” being handed to the street supervisor at City commission meetings with the comment “You need to look at this streets”.

What is the staff to do except to follow the orders/recommendations of the City Commission.
It is those “who scream the loudest” who get their concerns addressed.

Politics needs to be taken out of the equation once the funding is approved by the City Commission. The #1 comment/question I get is “Why were NorthTravis, North McCullough, Shafer Rd, and Line 17 the first streets to be repaired when plenty of other streets (i.e. East Stenger from Sam Houston to Business 77, etc) with heavier traffic needing addressing?

Businesses (whats left of them) on Robertson Street are still waiting for the street lights that were promised with the 2007 CO’s (Certificates of Obligations).

Mayor Sanchez inherited some serious obstacles (lawsuits against the city; a $17 million water “dud plant” not functioning and collecting dust, etc.).

However, I feel she is leading the City in the right direction. It will take time for Mayor Sanchez to clean up the mess she inherited but I have faith in her. My guess is that although it is not functioning, it must still be maintained and that is costing taxpayer dollars.

The City Commission meets twice a month and if you want your voice heard attend the meetings and
“Speak Up” during the “Public Comments” section of the agenda. Don’t just vote and expects things to get done automatically.

Unless ALL of us “Speak Up” nothing will change!

Zemmy, if you want to know the salaries of every employee of the City of San Benito, just ask the city. I did and I got them because it is “public information”.
