Christmastime is upon us, and thanks to a consumer-driven society full of shiny gadgets and expensive trinkets, the holiday season has become synonymous with gift-giving. From the latest consumer electronics to trendy new threads, many shoppers reportedly search far and wide in order to find the best possible gifts for their loved ones.

Keeping the fluctuating economy in mind, this reporter was curious as to how everyday members of the San Benito community have chosen to budget for this year’s expenditures. College student Rebecca Garcia, 22, said she has made a slight cut in her 2014 gift-giving budget, as compared to last year.

“I go to TSTC,” said Garcia, “and I’m trying to save money this year. I spent $500 on gifts last year. I bought gifts for a lot of people.” This year, Garcia is anticipating spending about half that amount. She said she believes she can cut costs by, “buying less expensive gifts, fewer name brands.”

Comparatively, with newer technology at all-time high prices, some shoppers are making more extravagant purchases than in years past. David Cortez, 42, said, “My budget has increased a little bit this year because electronics are a little more pricey than the previous years.”

Cortez explained, “Last year I spent approximately $250, for my two children,” who are ages 16 and 18. “This year my budget will be around $325.”

Some of the shoppers interviewed admitted to waiting until the last minute to purchase their gifts. Gus Martinez, age 30, said he isn’t too worried about making purchases. “My wife did it all, the budgeting and shopping. I think she will be done with everything today (Monday).” He added, “I let her do it all…she goes shopping for around 10-15 people.”

Martha Garcia, 45, said her budget has not changed this year. With three children, ages 16-22, she anticipates spending, “About $700…and that’s not including everyone.”

“I already spent a lot,” said Diana Medrano, 49, “and I’m still not done shopping.” Medrano, who started buying gifts back in November, said she hopes to finalize her purchases by Christmas Eve.  She said she anticipates spending about the same this year as in years past.

With an assortment of shoppers—from the early birds to those who wait until the final hours—who have varying budgets, the only common thread among our community seems to be they have all found a gift-giving strategy that works best for their budget.
