‘Batgirl’ arrested locally

San Benito police arrested a woman after she allegedly beat her boyfriend with a bat. According to police, Maria Cecilia Gonzalez was arrested on a charge of Aggravated Assault with a Weapon Against Family.

According to police, the incident allegedly occurred on Aug. 2, 2023.

According to reports, Gonzalez, colloquially dubbed “Batgirl” on social media, and her boyfriend allegedly engaged in a verbal altercation at the 1400 block of Fresno St. in San Benito. When officers arrived, they spoke to the man who allegedly had “multiple bite marks on his back,” as well as redness across his body, the report read.

The man said that his girlfriend, identified as Gonzalez, had allegedly punched and hit him with a bat, police said.

The report went on to read that Gonzalez was at the residence but allegedly refused to step outside. When officers entered, they learned that she had allegedly fled out the back door. Police searched the area that night, but the suspect could not located.

She was taken into custody and booked into the Cameron County Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center in Olmito on Nov. 12, 2023. Her bond was set at $75,000.

According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline (NDVH), domestic violence, also referred to as intimate partner violence (IPV), dating abuse, or relationship abuse, is a pattern of behaviors used by one partner to maintain power and control over another partner in an intimate relationship.

Domestic violence doesn’t discriminate, says the NDVH. People of any race, age, gender, sexuality, religion, education level, or economic status can be a victim — or perpetrator — of domestic violence, according to the NDVH. Domestic violence includes behaviors that physically harm, intimidate, manipulate, or control a partner or otherwise force them to behave in ways they don’t want to. This can happen through physical violence, threats, emotional abuse, or financial control.
