LOS FRESNOS, TX—Last Wednesday, City officials announced the retirement of City Manager Mark Milum, effective June 30, 2026.
Milum, who has served the City for more than two decades since November 2004, has been a cornerstone of local government and a lifelong champion of the community he has called home since childhood.
Born and raised in Los Fresnos, Milum has family roots in the area that go back multiple generations, from riding his bicycle through the same streets he later helped improve as city manager to raising his own family here.
His personal connection to the city has guided every decision he has made on behalf of his residents. Under his leadership, Los Fresnos has grown while preserving the tight-knit, family-centered values that make it so unique.
“Mark’s dedication to Los Fresnos goes far beyond his professional role,” said Mayor Alejando Flores. “He has poured his heart into this city because it is his home, his heritage, and his legacy. We are deeply grateful for his service and wish him all the best as he begins this next chapter.”
Milum shared, “Los Fresnos is more than a job – it has been my life. I leave with tremendous pride in what we have accomplished together as a team of great staff and elected officials and with complete confidence in the team that will carry this work forward.”
He went on to add, “I was fortunate to serve and help shape the city I love. It’s been better than a dream job.”
“Now, I’m excited to turn my full attention to the people who matter most: my wife, who has supported me through the late-night meetings, calls in the evenings, weekends, and holidays, and all the special events; my children; and my grandchildren,” he went on to say. “Retirement means mornings on the porch without a ringing phone, ball games, events, traveling, or maybe just watching the grass grow, but mainly being present for family that has stood by me through it all.”
The Los Fresnos City Council expressed appreciation for Milum’s commitment to a smooth transition and will begin selecting new leadership in the coming weeks. According to a City of Los Fresnos press release, Milum will remain available to assist with the transition to ensure continuity of City operations.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Mayor Flores wrote, “The City of Los Fresnos extends its heartfelt thanks to Mark Milum for his years of faithful service and wishes him joy, health, and fulfillment in retirement.”
He added that the Los Fresnos City Council voted to move forward with hiring a professional employment firm to begin selecting the community’s next City Manager.
“In my view, this is the right step forward. It allows us to take a professional and transparent approach to one of the most important decisions we will make as a council. Our goal is to ensure we attract and review the most qualified candidates who can help lead our city into the future,” Flores remarked.
“This is a significant moment for our community, and we are committed to doing this the right way—with integrity, openness, and a focus on what’s best for our residents,” The Mayor concluded.
