The San Benito CISD board of trustees held a regular Board Meeting last week, November 15, 2023 where they discussed a wide range of topics and recognized several groups of students and community volunteers.
The meeting was the last of its kind scheduled before board members convene at the end of the month to discuss the 2022-2023 district audit. The meeting began with Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Director Luis Gonzalez acknowledging National Parental Involvement Month by recognizing the newly formed Hall of Fame for volunteers.
According to Gonzalez, Juanita Gaytan was the first person to be inducted into the ceremonial HOF as the 99-year-old San Benito native has been an avid volunteer for SBCISD with various programs for over 30 years. Rounding out the group of three volunteers recognized were husband and wife duo Oscar and Hermina Quintanilla, whom Gonzalez noted, have also been volunteering with the district for over three decades.
The meeting continued with special recognition for several groups of students, including Honor Choir, the Varsity Cross Country team, the Varsity Tennis team, and the Varsity Volleyball team before jumping to the superintendent report from acting district head Alfredo Perez.
Perez gave a brief speech acknowledging the hard work of SBCISD support staff before allowing each individual board member to deliver a personal message to district employees.
Once the recognition portion of the meeting was done, trustees quickly moved to the “consent agenda” items where policies and revisions were quickly approved.
A partnership between SBCISD and the Texas Workforce was approved followed by an amendment to the partnership with UTRGV Hybrid college classes to minimize essential paperwork.
