Public asked to sponsor child

The Christmas season has arrived and with it also arrive toy drives from multiple organizations and non-profits. However, the San Benito Boys & Girls Club is offering a different take on the holiday charity drive.

President Liz Chavez said she created “Sponsor a Child’s Christmas” four years ago after observing and participating in other holiday toy drives. But she felt like she wanted to create a more personal experience for members of the B&G Club so that they could receive gifts based on their likes and wishes.

“So one day I just had the idea that they could receive something they wouldn’t necessarily receive at home, so that way they would enjoy Christmas that much more,” Chavez said.

This is the fourth year the Boys & Girls Club holds its “Sponsor a Child’s Christmas” event, which sees new and returning sponsors each receive a wish list from one or more children, ages 6 to 18, to fulfill, which all culminates in the Club’s annual Christmas party, where the children receive their gifts.

“What we do is we hand the gifts out at our annual Christmas party, we invite members and their family members to have a dinner to see where their kids spend most of their time after school,” Chavez said. “We have Santa there, community members are there, we sing Christmas carols, we have raffles for parents and staff, and we’ve been having it for the past four or five years.”
