With early voting closing Friday, voters will head to the polls on Tuesday, March 3, to cast their ballots in this year’s Democratic and Republican Primaries.
The Democrats have thus far outvoted their Republican counterparts, casting 16,509 ballots countywide as of Wednesday’s totals, with the highest numbers coming from the Cameron County Brownsville Annex Building on Levee Street, where 5,447 ballots were cast for the Democrats.
The next highest is the Harlingen Annex Building, with 1,450 ballots cast for the Democrats. The Los Indios Community Center registered 63 ballots cast for the Democrats, while the Rio Hondo Civic Center registered 387 ballots cast for the Democrats.
The San Benito Community Building recorded 1,448 Democratic voters.
By comparison, the Republicans saw 6,016 total voters cast their ballots as of Wednesday’s available totals.
The highest output there came at the Brownsville Public Library, with 1,402 voters casting their ballots as Republicans.
The Harlingen County Annex Building recorded 1,104 ballots for the Republicans, and the Los Indios Community Center recorded 21 ballots for the Republicans.
The Rio Hondo Civic Center added another 188 ballots for Republicans, while 479 ballots were cast for Republicans at the San Benito Community Building on Heywood.
For the Democrats, some of the more heated races include the race for US State Senator, which features James Talarico vying for the seat against Ahmad R. Hassan and Jasmine Crockett.
In US Representative District 34 race, Vicente Gonzalez faces Etienne Rosas. Gina Hiojosa and others are seeking to meet with the Republican gubernatorial candidate, a slate which includes incumbent Grey Abbott.
Locally, former San Benito Commissioner Rene Villafranco faces San Benito Municipal Judge and attorney Noe Alaniz for Justice of the Peace, No. 3, Pct. 1.
Incumbent David A. Betancourt is facing challenger Johnathan Gracia for County Treasurer, and Sylvia Garza is seeking to retain her County Clerk post against Denise Garza.
Current County Judge Eddie Trevino, Jr. is being challenged by Esteban “Steve” Guerra, and former Cameron County Sheriff Eric Garza. San Benito’s Jesus T. Chuy Garcia, Jr., is seeking a seat as District Judge for the 107th Judicial District against Erin Hernandez Garcia and Noe Garza.
Locally, for the Republicans, a number of candidates, including Gregory Scott Kunkle, Jr., Mayra Flores, and Eric Flores, are vying for the US Representative, District 34 seat, and former San Benito School District Trustee Janie Flores is attempting to retain her seat as state representative.
Offering an alternative to U.S. Senator is Sara Canady, who is going up against a myriad of opponents, including incumbent John Cornyn and a strong challenger in Ken Paxton.
Election Day is Tuesday, March 3. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Area polling places include Ed Downs Elementary, Fred Booth Elementary, La Encantada Elementary, La Paloma Middle School, the San Benito Community Building on Heywood, and Sullivan Environmental Science Academy.
Winners from both parties will face off in the General Election.
