COMMENTARY: SBA promotes business growth

Joe Martinez, Ed.D., is a Doctor of Curriculum & Technology, a U.S. Military Veteran, and a native of San Benito.

The Small Business Administration (SBA) performs many functions.

Its main purpose, however, is to promote business ventures by supporting willing entrepreneurs and small businesses in attaining the American Dream by helping them secure financial support.

They do this by providing guaranteed bank loans, making it easier for individuals to secure financing for business ventures.

They also provide veterans and women with the means to secure federal contracts, which is a real opportunity to start a business. They also provide the counseling and training needed for a person to succeed in their business endeavors.

Other areas the SBA can address include providing the means for an entrepreneur to develop a solid business plan needed to secure a business loan.

The SBA also offers other forms of assistance to the public, including disaster loans, microloans, and investment capital, grants, and surety bonds.

One of the main reasons I’m covering this topic is that San Benito needs an economic revival to provide a much-needed boost to our local economy.

This helps ensure that people who don’t have the means to travel far for work can find jobs locally, boosting their standard of living. There is much poverty here in San Benito, and entrepreneurs and business opportunities are much needed in our city.

Speaking with Veronica Chavez, an SBA representative, I asked her to come to San Benito to provide guidance on what is needed to obtain financial support to start a business.

She is willing to attend our market days and introduce some of the SBA programs that support aspiring entrepreneurs and startups. She is also interested in providing a more in-depth forum beyond the Market Days presentation.

Small businesses drive America’s success. They also employ many people with good wages and an opportunity to give back to the community.

Employment opportunities can also provide a means for a city to collect more tax dollars, which are much needed to improve our city’s education and local social programs.

If you are interested in acquiring a business loan, please keep watching for future notifications from this paper in the not-so-distant future.

Speaking with the San Benito Chamber of Commerce representatives, they told me that sometime in April is the best time for this, so stay tuned.

It takes all of us to make our city grow and prosper. By pulling together, we can improve the quality of life our residents enjoy through diligent economic development in our city.

If you are interested in becoming a business owner and attaining the American Dream, you are invited to attend a future SBA presentation to help make your business dream come true.
