LOS INDIOS, TX—The mayor of this quiet river community has stepped down from office, and city officials have scheduled a special election to fill the vacancy.

According to Los Indios City Secretary Jessica Cabrera, Mayor Jaime Gonzalez submitted a written resignation, which the city commission accepted at its last meeting two weeks ago. The resignation took effect on February 12 of this year.

Cabrera said Gonzalez resigned due to work obligations after starting a new job that requires weekly travel. The city confirmed the resignation was unrelated to any investigation, litigation, or health matter.

Officials also confirmed that Gonzalez met the residency requirements at the time of his resignation and continues to reside in Los Indios.

Following the resignation, Mayor Pro Tem Anita Weaver is serving as acting mayor.

City officials have called a special election to fill the mayoral vacancy. Cabrera said Weaver has filed to run for mayor. If no other candidates file, the election will be canceled under state election procedures.

The mayoral vacancy was addressed at a recent commissioners’ meeting. The special election will determine who will serve the remainder of the term.

City officials announced no additional changes to city operations as a result of the leadership transition.
