San Benito will be well-represented at the Harlingen Convention Center on May 17 when the Resaca City’s own, Ricardo “Kid Dynamo” Camacho faces Oscar Robledo in a professional boxing match that is sure to not disappoint enthusiasts of the “sweet science.”

Camacho (3-2-1) is coming off a controversial loss, by way of decision, at the end of a fight in Edinburg that left many believing that it should have resulted in a split decision.

What Camacho and his team took away from the fight was that he may need to minimize the number of bouts he enters, providing him more time to recover, train, and strategize.

As first reported by the NEWS, Camacho was introduced to the sport through the San Benito CISD’s Afterschool Program and by his current trainer, Abel Fonseca II, another San Benito native who is still employed by the Afterschool Program.

Camacho said that while he had an appreciation for soccer and casually partook in the sport, his true calling was in the ring, adding that he and his brother began following the sport through their father who is a boxing fan.

Fonseca led Camacho’s brother, Eduardo, to compete at the Golden Gloves level however, as the years passed and life got in the way, both brothers stepped away from boxing, only to find their way back into the ring relatively recently.

“He (Ricardo) came up to me and said he wanted to go pro, and I said, ‘all right,’” Fonseca recalled during a training session at Legends Boxing Gym on Harrison in Harlingen, adding that he’s hard pressed to recall a more disciplined and determined competitor than the elder pugilist.

Ricardo Camacho battled a more experienced fighter for his first pro fight, which resulted in a no contest ruling, a conclusion that Camacho and his team could live with given the experience of his opponent and the fact that the ruling resulted from a head-butt by Camacho’s opponent which caused a cut to Camacho’s head.

His second professional fight occurred on Saturday, April 27 of last year at Brownsville Sports Park as he was third on the card during Marines’ Promotions, “Fight Night 2” featuring international fighters from as far as San Antonio, Corpus Christi, and Monterrey, Mexico.

Once again, Camacho faced a more experienced fighter yet walked away with a split decision, taking home half of the purse.

A month later at Brownsville’s Jacob Brown Auditorium, Camacho stepped out of the ring with an outright decision in his favor, which he followed up with a fight in Laredo.

Now, however, Camacho will be backed by a contingent of San Benito support that includes Robert Rodriguez, who is taking his low rider club from San Benito to the event, Xavier Izaguirre of King Kuts Barbershop in San Benito, who’s rapping during intermission, and Matt Montalvo, who will be rapping while Team Camacho walks to the ring.

Also walking into the ring the same day is Manuel “El Tomate” Lerma, another Fonseca pro boxing acolyte who is fighting the same day in Laredo. Omar Benavides, fellow boxing coach from San Benito is traveling to Laredo to accompany Lerma while Fonseca is in Camacho’s corner. Lerma’s record stands at 4-1.

Other sponsors include Javier Gonzales, Underground Tattoos, Pappasito’s Smokehouse, Big Country, In Your Corner RGV Counseling, Maya Graphics & Designs, Nora Herrera Tax Service & Notary, and SB Wings.

Doors to the Harlingen fights open at 4 p.m. with the first bout slated at 5 p.m. For ticket information, contact Abel Fonseca II at abelfonsecaii@hotmail.com or call (956) 456-6859. The fight is promoted by Juarez Rolo’s Promotions.
