The San Benito Greyhound Varsity Basketball Team closed the first half of its District 32-6A schedule with a 91-41 loss to the Los Fresnos Falcons at home last Friday.

The ‘Hounds compete in a small five-team district, and unfortunately for San Benito, the ’Hounds’ are the only squad with a winless record at 0-4.

San Benito Head Basketball Coach Luis Garza said points have been hard to come by, even though the effort to compete is evident.

“The kids are playing hard. I really feel like we have put ourselves in the right positions to be successful,” Garza said. “Unfortunately, we are struggling to put points up.”

The first quarter of their game against the Falcons was an indicator that there were signs of solid play as San Benito closed the quarter on a 7-0 run to trail by four points.

Sophomore Nehemiah Rivera made a couple of free throws as he led the ‘Hounds in scoring with 16 points. Seniors Devan Ullueva and Peter Jackson had a basket and a trey in that scoring spurt.

The Falcons just had more offensive firepower the rest of the game, taking a 13-point lead at the half. They then put the outcome out of question going into the final quarter.

Jackson finished with six points. Eight different San Benito players scored in the Los Fresnos game.

The ‘Hounds will continue to play out the remaining schedule, obviously looking for a victory.

“No one likes to lose, and we certainly don’t, but it is always about character building, and we need to respond and have resolve,” Garza said. “We got the second half coming up, and hopefully we can show some resolve. We will change some things up, and attack the second half with urgency, and determination.”
San Benito will play at Brownsville Veterans Memorial on Friday, Jan. 31. Veterans lost to Los Fresnos, 75-47, on Tuesday.

San Benito’s district losses came against Brownsville Veterans Memorial (56-47), Harlingen (68-37) and Brownsville Hanna (47-30).

The Hounds are 7-12 on the season.
