RIO HONDO, TX—For the second time this season, the Lady Bobcat Varsity Basketball Team eclipsed the 100-point mark by defeating the Santa Rosa Lady Warriors last week.
Rio Hondo won the District 32-3A game, 102-23.
Four Rio Hondo players scored in double figures, including freshman Carlie Rodriguez (34 points), senior Emily Molina (24 points), junior Abby Atkinson (18 points), and Evan Ayala (17 points).
In November, the Lady ’Cats beat IDEA Edinburg College Prep, 105-12.
Rio Hondo has finished games scoring in the 90s five times, and in the 80s four times this season.
More importantly, however, the Lady ’Cats have won three consecutive district games since losing to Lyford (46-40) at home.
This week, Rio Hondo defeated Raymondville, 75-40. The Lady ’Cats sit atop the district standings in first place with a 15-1 record, and are 25-3 on the season.
They close out the district portion of their season against IDEA teams Sports Park on Friday, Jan. 31, and Robindale on Tuesday, Feb. 2.
Meanwhile, their male counterparts, the Rio Hondo Bobcats, have not been able to earn any kind of consecutive wins since losing to the Lyford Bulldogs in an away game several weeks ago.
They are falling in the District 32-3A standings, owners of two straight losses to Santa Rosa (59-54) last week and Raymondville (66-52) this week.
The losses have put Rio Hondo in fourth place at 10-4, still alive for a playoff berth.
Lyford (13-1) is alone in first place, followed by Raymondville and IDEA Sports Park with identical 10-4 records.
The Bobcats will host IDEA Sports Park on Friday, Jan. 31. Rio Hondo looks to avenge a 43-41 loss to that team last month.
Rio Hondo closes district play at IDEA Robindale in Brownsville on Tuesday, Feb. 2.
The Bobcats are 16-13 on the year.
