The San Benito Lady Greyhound hoopsters secured an important win and did it in a most convincing manner by defeating the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons at home, 59-42, last Friday.
They exacted revenge on a team that earlier in the District 32-6A schedule beat them by a close 50-47 margin.
The Lady ’Hounds now look to even the score against district foes, Brownsville Veterans Memorial, on Friday, Jan. 31 and Harlingen on Feb. 4, who beat them recently.
San Benito competes in a small five-team district so Head Coach Abel Moreno, and his Lady ‘Hounds know their opportunities are limited.
Beating Los Fresnos was a good start.
Senior Angelina Reyes led all scorers in the game with 24 points.
“She looked her best she has on the court since she came back after her injury,” Garza said.
Senior Valerie Vela (12 points) scored in double figures. Vela also eclipsed 200 points and 200 rebounds on the season, Garza said.
Senior Jade Maya (12 assists) and junior Oneida Ojeda added 8 points each.
“Two things is we executed the game plan. We had a defensive game plan that we executed very well, and we finally had an exceptional shooting day. We were 9 for 21 from the three-point line and 14 for 24 from the two,” Garza said. “Those two things, coupled with an exceptional turnover rate, really helped us. Offensively, we were patient, and looking at the weaknesses in the (Los Fresnos) defense. We knew they were there; we just needed to be patient. We had contributions from nine-of-nine players who stepped on the floor, so it was great.”
San Benito will now look to improve on its 3-3 district record and close out the regular season with two consecutive victories before starting the playoffs.
Veterans, which beat Los Fresnos this week by a 50-35 score, improved to 4-2 in district. Harlingen is undefeated at 6-0.
San Benito is 21-11 on the year.
