When the San Benito Greyhound Varsity Soccer Team lost its match to the Edinburg Economedes Jaguars this week, it was the first time the ’Hounds lost to one of the three Edinburg schools.
So far in San Benito’s schedule, it has a win against Edinburg (2-1) and a tie against Edinburg North (0-0).
The five goals against Edinburg North was the most San Benito has allowed since a 4-1 loss to Laredo United on Jan. 2. San Benito, however, did face a North team that improved to an 11-2 record.
The ’Hounds have earned multiple victories also as their 5-3-2 record would indicate.
“We closed out the non-district season at Economedes, and will open up district at home next week,” San Benito Head Soccer Coach William Huerta said.
San Benito’s best stretch of matches came from Jan. 3-10 when it won four consecutive match-ups. Wins came, in part, during tournament play against Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North (2-1), IDEA Riverview (3-3), Donna (4-1), and Weslaco (6-2).
Only once has San Benito been shutout. It has scored at least three goals on four different occasions.
San Benito will have its district opener against the Brownsville Hanna Eagles on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at Bobby Morrow Stadium. The match begins at 7:30 p.m.
San Benito’s offense literally runs through the efforts of junior Jiovanni Najera, who shares duties as a midfielder and forward. He has 15 goals.
Sophomore midfielder forward Francisco Barrientos has three goals, followed by junior defender Diego Martinez with two goals.
Sophomore David Gonzalez, junior Ivan Iturbe, sophomore Bryan Mares, and junior Antwoan Alegria each have one goal.
