The San Benito Lady Greyhounds have nearly won 10 matches dating back to December, all in non-district competition, and close January at Weslaco Friday evening.
San Benito currently owns a 9-9-2 record.
“Our team has been working hard this season, and we have some key players who have been making significant contributions on the field,” said San Benito Head Girls’ Soccer Coach Wilbert Padron.
One of their last matches that was described as “nail-biting and fierce” was at La Joya when the Lady ‘Hounds lost to the Lady Coyotes, 2-1.
“Despite the loss, our team showcased incredible determination and skill throughout the game,” said Padron, who was exceptionally impressed with the defensive efforts of the players.
In 20 matches, San Benito has allowed two goals or less 16 times. They have earned eight shutouts during regulation play.
The Lady ‘Hounds will begin district play Feb. 4 when they host the Brownsville Hanna Lady Eagles at 5:30 p.m. at Bobby Morrow Stadium.
San Benito will face district foes Brownsville Veterans Memorial, Los Fresnos, and Harlingen later in February and March.
It was December scrimmages against Laredo ISD schools like Martin, LBJ, and United, as well as Pharr-San Juan-Alamo, and Mission that gave Coach Padron and his staff ideas of how to round out his varsity and JV Dark and JV Light teams.
Against Laredo schools in which they went 1-2, the Lady ‘Hounds scored four goals, but allowed eight goals.
They experienced solid play in a couple of tournaments with victories against IDEA Los Encinos, La Joya and Corpus Christi King squads.
Soccer matches are not for the faint at heart as weather many times in January and February lent themselves to players suiting up in warm gear.
One such match was at Bobby Morrow Stadium against the Edinburg North Lady Cougars. San Benito fell, 1-4, during an evening that was both cold and drizzling.
San Benito responded a few days later with a 5-1 win against the P-SJ-A Lady Bears.
