On April 5, 2024 at or around 2:45 p.m., San Benito Police Department (SBPD) Traffic Enforcement Unit Officers conducted a vehicle traffic stop on a four-door passenger car, off of the 200 Block of East Business Highway 77, for an alleged traffic infraction.
The vehicle was occupied by two male individuals. Upon initial contact, the driver of the vehicle provided information to the investigating officer indicating that he had a weapon within the vehicle.
The investigating officer, for his safety, made further contact with the driver and passenger outside of their vehicle. While further identifying and speaking with the passenger, the individual allegedly attempted to flee from officers on foot. After a foot pursuit, the individual was ultimately arrested for his actions.
According to the SBPD, while investigating further into the male passenger, he was identified as Joshua Morales, a San Benito resident. During a search of his person, officers allegedly discovered Morales to have, in his possession, approximately 38 grams of cocaine, approximately 1.15 ounces of marijuana, approximately 3.5 grams of illegal substances from narcotics penalty group 3 (alprazolam) and approximately 1 gram of THC resin.
The SBPD report further states that in addition to his alleged prior actions and drug possession, Morales also allegedly resisted arrest during his apprehension.
As of the issuance of the SBPD’s report, Morales was pending arraignment. A SBPD press release stresses that the suspect is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
