Area students take accolades

EDINBURG—The Region One Education Service Center (ESC) Special Education Program awarded 24 students for their success and participation in the South Texas Braille Challenge and South Texas Low Vision Challenge, held Wednesday, March 1 at the Region One ESC Conference Center. Among the winners were a number of San Benito and Rio Hondo students.

The Region One ESC Special Education Department is the only education entity in the State of Texas to host academic competitions dedicated to the development of the social and sensory efficiency skills of students who are blind or visually impaired.

Participation was open to all regional students of all grade levels who are blind or visually impaired.
According to Region One ESC Special Education Specialist Susana Andrews, the intent of the contests is to further the utilization of core curriculum skills by enabling students to interact with peers from other schools through scholastic competition.

Students who are blind or visually impaired competed in the South Texas Braille Challenge, which tested their Braille reading, writing and comprehension.

Participants in the South Texas Low Vision Challenge were tasked to utilize assistive technology to locate hidden items placed throughout the Region One ESC Conference Center.

South Texas Braille Challenge winners are as follows;
Rookie Division—1st Place: Angelina Garcia, Rio Hondo ISD; 2nd Place: Juan Carlos Soto-Garcia, Edinburg CISD; 3rd Place: Kaitlyn Garza, McAllen ISD; 4th Place: Rebekkah Garcia, Rio Hondo ISD
Apprentice Division—1st Place: Jorge Sanchez, Santa Rosa ISD; 2nd Place: Gael Ricardez, McAllen ISD; 3rd Place: Estaban Ezequiel Cuellar, Brownsville ISD.
