The San Benito girls’ basketball team has been on a rampage this month, posting an 8-1 record in Dec. to push their win total to 17.
With just two more games left in the calendar year, the Lady ’Hounds were hoping to carry a five-game winning streak into district play, but they had to get past two tough teams to do so. After an extended break from competition that saw them go 12 days without a game, San Benito hosted the Edinburg Lady Bobcats in the first of their two-game slate this week.
Despite another offensive explosion from Sophomore Angelina Reyes, the Lady ’Hounds were unable to extend their winning streak, falling to Edinburg 52-50 in a nailbiter that featured seven lead changes in the final eight minutes.
The game started off slow with both teams showing obvious signs of rust. Nearly three minutes went by before the scoring started pouring in. The Lady ’Hounds found themselves in an uncharacteristic 8-2 deficit early on, but Jasmin Martinez was able to jump-start San Benito’s offense with back-to-back jump shots.
Unable to find her shot, Reyes instead focused on defense with three steals and two blocks in the opening period. With under two minutes left in the first quarter, Reyes hit two quick baskets to give the Lady ’hounds their first lead, but Edinburg added a last second layup to take a slim 13-12 lead into the second period.
The Lady Bobcats continued to use their size to their advantage, notching most of their baskets in the paint while Reyes continued to drive the San Benito offense. The Lady Bobcats seemed poised to take a seven-point lead into halftime before Reyes and Lorena Segura scored two layups in under a minute to cut the halftime deficit to 28-25 for San Benito.
