San Benito legend Freddy Fender may have died ten years ago, but that hasn’t stopped the people down at the START center from keeping his name alive. This past Thursday at a joint luncheon with the Rotary Club, Ron Rodgers, the president of the START center, formally announced the winners of the 2016 Freddy Fender Humanitarian Award. The three people who will be honored at an award ceremony on May 20th at the Texas State Technical College Cultural Arts Center include: Texas Senator and Brownsville native Eddie Lucio Jr., former San Benito community advocate Evelon Dale, who passed away in March of last year, and current San Benito Economic Development Corporation Board President Federico Garza.
