Squads eye playoffs

RIO HONDO, TX— Runs came at a premium when the Rio Hondo Lady Bobcats and the La Feria Lady Lions squared off in a non-district game this week that ended in a 26-12 score and loss.

Head Coach Benjamin Perez penciled in the game before the Lady ’Cats’ District 32-3A finale against the Progreso Lady Red Ants at home this Friday.

RHHS looks to improve on its 4-3 district record after defeating the Santa Rosa Lady Warriors (20-0 score) and losing to the Raymondville Lady Bearkats (6-5 score).

RHHS is accustomed to scoring and has an impressive presence from the pitching mound. Jacquelynn Hinojosa struck out 9 batters and allowed only 3 hits against Raymondville.

Against Santa Rosa, the Lady ’Cats had Olga Zuniga, Madison Lopez, and Mayeli Hernandez combine for 7 hits and 6 RBIs.

Zuniga had an inside-the-park homer and two RBI doubles.

Hinojosa was the winning pitcher, striking out 6.

Among some of the other players who have come up big at the plate this season district are Rayla Tello, Danielle Rocha, Rebekah Zuniga, Allison Atkinson, and Carlie Rodriguez.

Earlier in district play, Tello had her own inside-the-park homerun, earning a grand slam in the process.

In the district standings, the Lyford Lady Bulldogs (7-0) have already claimed the title. Second-place Raymondville improved to 4-2, one of those losses to RHHS earlier this season.

The top four teams advance to the postseason.

The Lady ’Cats are 12-16-1 on the season.

BASEBALL

The Rio Hondo Bobcats had a District 32-3A game scheduled with the Santa Rosa Warriors on Wednesday.

They needed the victory as they sat at 2-3 in the district behind district leader Raymondville (5-0) and second-place Lyford (4-1).

The top four teams advance to the playoffs.

Under Head Coach Sergio Gonzalez, RHHS still has three games left in district play to improve in the standings.

They have a three-game losing streak that includes Raymondville, Lyford, and a non-district opponent. The Bobcats scored 2 runs in each of their district games.

Nathan Martinez and Juan Padilla scored, with Marcus Flores and Christopher Galvan earning RBIs each, against the Bearkats.

In the Bulldogs’ game, Flores had a run, as did Jeremy Mata. Galvan notched the lone RBI for the Bobcats.

Galvan leads the team in RBIs with 21. He also leads RHHS in doubles (5) and triples (2).

Ty Alaniz is the team’s hits leader with 26.

Flores owns a .455 batting average, which is tops for the Bobcats.

RHHS is 11-15 on the year.
