For nearly two decades, Elias Martinez was the face of San Benito softball. The head coach led the Lady ’Hounds on an unprecedented run that included seven sweet 16 appearances and the State semifinals two out of the last three years. Martinez, who left to coach the Harlingen South program this summer, was widely regarded as one of the best softball coaches in the area and his departure fueled talk about San Benito not being able to produce at the same level.
Well, with almost half the season gone and the Lady ’Hounds still steamrolling their opponents and boasting a perfect record, now seems like the perfect time for the old coach to pay a visit to his former stomping grounds.
