One day, San Benito High School math teacher Alejandra Trevino was in her room grading papers while on her conference period, as she usually does. Only that day, Trevino got an unexpected visit from SBHS Principal Henry Sanchez, who had some rather surprising news for the eight year teacher.
Sanchez walked in with a grin on his face and broke the news to Trevino. She had won the 2015 Hispanic Engineering Science and Technology (HESTEC) Teacher of the Year award. So, what was so surprising about “one of the most dedicated teachers,” winning a regional teacher of the year award? Trevino wasn’t even aware she was a nominee.
“I was honored and shocked at the same time,” said Trevino. “I’ve always had respect for the HESTEC program, but to be awarded as a teacher of the year is an extremely great honor for me.”
