After a controversial ending to the tenure of former San Benito CISD Superintendent Antonio Limon back in 2014, school district officials were optimistic that the hiring of Dr. Marc A. Puig would help steer the district in a more positive direction.
Now, after just half a year into the three-year contract he signed, Puig has resigned as Superintendent at SBCISD, leaving the question of what’s next for the school district?
When Dr. Puig initially took office in San Benito, he cited the unique opportunity to resuscitate a district that was financially circling the drain as a motivating factor, telling the News in his first interview after being hired that he was “attracted to the challenge.” “I knew what I was getting into, or what I applied for,” Puig told the News.
However, during his final interview as Superintendent (the day before his resignation), Dr. Puig admitted that he underestimated the extent of the school district’s budget crisis. “I think we were all stunned… I don’t think I could have anticipated the magnitude of the financial catastrophe,” he said while at the same time applauding the district for “finally turning the corner financially.”
