An apartment complex fire early Saturday morning on the 400 block of Hidalgo Street ended
more calmly than expected after two firefighters fell through the roof while fighting the blaze.

Once on the scene, firefighters were informed that there was a possibility of kids on the second floor, causing the SBFD to intensify their rescue efforts as flames could already be seen engulfing the second story. The group of six responding firefighters had to take a back fire entrance in order to get upstairs.

“By the time we got up there, the fire was everywhere,” said SBFD Captain Romeo Mancillas. “We canvased the second floor, I used thermal vision to make sure we didn’t miss anybody but everybody had already been evacuated.” According to Mancillas, one of the tenants was able to alert everybody of the fire before anybody got hurt.
