After 26 years of service with San Benito Consolidated Independent School District, former Superintendent of Schools Antonio G. Limón will officially retire on Feb. 27, and he will be heading out in style.

SBCISD has made plans to host a Retirement Recognition Ceremony in Limón’s honor at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26 at the John F. Barron Administration Building, located at 240 N. Crockett.

“It was 26 years I spent in this district,” said Limón of SBCISD, “but 38 years I worked (in education) all together.”

Limón has been on leave since the first of the year, and as such has already taken care of most administrative duties associated with leaving a position.  He said, “I have been on leave since Jan. 1, taking my days and my sick days. I haven’t been in (the office).”

He added, “The 27th is the last day of my leave, and the first official day of my retirement. Whatever needs to be done for work was done, was taken care of, and now I’m just winding down.”

To help explain how it feels to officially retire after such an extensive career in education, specifically serving as superintendent from 2004-2014, with a lighthearted laugh Limón quoted part of  the chorus of one of his favorite songs, “Everything is Fine,” written and sung by country artist Josh Turner “I got a peace of mind / You know I can’t complain / I make it a point to thank the Lord / When I got Him on the line/ I’m feeling good and everything is fine.”

As for his official retirement plans, Limón said, “I’d like to get involved with First Christian Church in Harlingen, doing more ministry work like visiting nursing homes. My wife and I like to work with kids, and would also like to get more involved with ministry.”

Before he exits, Limón wanted to extend his gratitude to several people, starting with the current Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Marc A. Puig. “Dr. Puig called me and was very gracious to offer (to host) the ceremony. I would also like to thank the community for the opportunity to be superintendent for 10 years. I’m very happy to have served. Once a Greyhound, always a Greyhound.”

Limón and his wife live in San Benito and are “looking forward to helping the people, in general.” Although rumors are presently circulating that he might throw his name in the running of the forthcoming SBCISD elections, Limón dispelled them as such.

Nonetheless, San Benito may not have seen the last of the former superintendent, in an official capacity. Regarding running for trustee, Limón added, “I wouldn’t rule it out in the future.”
