Local authorities arrested a man on Wednesday, Aug. 27, for allegedly attacking his pregnant girlfriend.

According to a police report, 31-year-old Anthony Lee Spangler of San Benito is accused of putting his girlfriend in a chokehold while hitting her in the face and body.

The 20-year-old woman, who according to reports is pregnant, told San Benito police officers that she was in pain.

Eyewitnesses at the scene informed police they saw the couple arguing along the side of the road on the 900 block of Whalen Street next to a parked car when the incident occurred. It’s unclear what the argument was about.

According to San Benito Police Department Detective Rogelio Banda Jr., Spangler was unwilling to talk and the woman was unable to offer more information, because she required medical attention.

Banda said that Spangler did not have an arrest record or criminal history that he was aware of, but the victim did allege that he has attacked her before.

Banda said he was unaware of the woman’s condition as of press time, further noting, “I don’t know … if she was released. I have nothing pending on that case.”

Spangler was taken to City Jail and arraigned by Municipal Judge David Garza. His bond is set at $10,000. The Cameron County Sheriff’s Department inmates list did not show Spangler incarcerated at County Jail as of presstime.
