The Brownsville Police Department Bomb Squad was called to assist local authorities who discovered what was initially believed to be a grenade inside a San Benito home.

Operations Chief Martin Morales Jr. of the San Benito Police Department confirmed Tuesday evening that the suspected grenade was found after 5 p.m. inside a home that’s being remodeled on the 1300 block of Combes Street, which is located across from St. Theresa Catholic Church.

“No one is there (at the home), but the owners showed up and discovered a hand grenade inside the house,” Morales said. “They also noticed that a window was broken, so we decided to check it out if it was a live grenade.”

Morales said that authorities with the BPD Bomb Squad were promptly called to the scene to offer their assistance. Residents within a three-block radius of the home in question were reportedly asked to stay indoors as the investigation was being conducted.

The chief could not confirm as of 7 p.m. whether the device was indeed a live grenade.

Authorities remained at the scene as of press time Tuesday.
