Cameron County Emergency Management Coordinator Humberto Barrera confirmed on Tuesday that a Molotov cocktail was likely used in a case of arson that reportedly occurred just outside San Benito.

According to Barrera, investigators have determined that a Molotov cocktail was used in a fire reported sometime between 5 and 6 a.m. Monday, Aug. 25, at a mobile home on the 2200 block of Kilgore Road. The residence, according to authorities, has suffered extensive smoke damage despite the fire being concentrated to a single room.

It’s been reported that although there were five occupants in the mobile home, only one male subject was treated at a local hospital for smoke inhalation and has since been released.

“What we have is a fire that was caused intentionally using a Molotov cocktail,” Barrera said. “We’re currently working with the State Fire Marshal’s Office in efforts identifying the suspect.”

Barrera said he could not divulge additional details on the case because it was an ongoing investigation. However, Barrera did say that a $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the suspect or suspects responsible.

Concerning the weapon used in the crime, Barrera said, “We have seen it (Molotov cocktail use) in the past. They’re not common but it also isn’t something we haven’t seen before.”

The County EMC added, “We’ve been working back-to-back fires – one was Sunday and the other Monday.”

Barrera was referring to a separate incident involving a fire that also occurred at a mobile home – this one reportedly in the La Feria area and tragically ending with the deaths of two women.
