A second suspect in the alleged murder of a San Benito man has been apprehended by authorities and currently awaits trial, according to Cameron County court records.

Lee Roy Hernandez, 20, of Harlingen was arrested Friday, July 4, by deputies with the Cameron County Sheriff’s Department for the murder of Leroy Mena, 42, of San Benito. The charge stems from a Feb. 22 incident in which Mena was reportedly assaulted by men with brass knuckles – this while at a social gathering on the 1600 block of Sam Houston Street in Harlingen.

Esequiel Martinez, 39, was later arrested by the Harlingen Police Department for the crime and initially charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. Mena, however, died March 1 at the Christus Spohn Hospital in Corpus Christi due to injuries sustained as a result of blunt force trauma, according to a Nueces County medical examiner’s cause of death findings. Martinez’ charge was then elevated to murder and he turned himself in to authorities.

Martinez, who is currently incarcerated in Cameron County Jail on $750,000 bond, now awaits an announcement hearing set for Sept. 18 and a jury trial on Sept. 29.

Hernandez also awaits a trial date within County Jail, according to Melissa Zamora of the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office.
