Birders from all over the country descended upon the area over the weekend hoping to catch a rare glimpse of the Amazon Kingfisher (pictured above), which was spotted just outside San Benito during the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival.

A rare bird has birders expressing excitement after it was spotted just outside of San Benito this weekend.

According to Marci Madsen Fuller, Chair of the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival, the Amazon Kingfisher was discovered at a resaca near State Highway 100 and Business 77 on Saturday, Nov. 9.

Just how rare is the Amazon Kingfisher to the area? This weekend’s discovery marks only the second recorded sighting of the bird in the United States.

And yet San Benito has failed to get on the ecotourism bandwagon…a multimillion dollar event that could bring much needed tax money to our town. Of what good does it do us to be named the resaca city if we do not capitalize on our natural resource? Hopefully with our new EDC person we will finally get the show on the road and become more involved in the birding industry. I have written various times over the past decade on o the need for us to become involved in the Birding Festival. All along the Valley McAllen, Mission, Weslaco, Brownsville have all capitalized on the tourists that come for these events but San Benito has stood quietly by as hundreds of thousands of cars whiz by to the next birding event.
