The second Market Days event in a series of six was held on Saturday, Nov. 9, off Sam Houston Boulevard near the railroad tracks and the Veterans War Memorial.

The event, titled “Welcome Back Winter Texans,” saw approximately 75 different vendors come out to sell various items in what’s an increase from the previous event, in which approximately 50 vendors participated.

“The first one we had in October, we had a goal of 30 vendors, and we had 50 at the first one,” said San Benito Economic Development Corporation Director Salomon Torres.

Great job to the SB EDC Director, Members and Staff! Why not promote more farmers to bring in fresh fruit and produce? San Benito has the opportunity to be a jewel of the Valley if we work together. No other City in the Valley has the music, culture and history that our city has! Great people; cursed with bad politicians!

I agree with you Mr. Canas and don’t forget the most important thing is that they are having the Market Days where it should have been done all along. Remember it’s about promoting business for the downtown area not by Crockett street. Finally some of the organizers got smart and did a good and positive thing for our city. Now If they can bring back the Christmas Festival like it used to be and we’re definitely headed in the right direction. An event is only as good as the organizers, last year’s supposedly Christmas Festival was a debacle with little or no organization. Kudos to the new organizers!

I kept telling the city that the only way to make this event successful was to change the date. We spent several years having our market days at a point in the month when people have run out of money. Good for the new guy running the EDC. The fact is that our town’s major employer is the school district and probably most of these folks live pay check to pay check. By the time the third Saturday would come around all the money was gone. Another good thing that has been added is the music aspect of the Market Days. People like good music to liven the day.
One final suggestion I’d like to give is to move the banner over closer to highway 83. I believe people looking down from the overpass would be able to see that sign and would be tempted to drive into town to see our market days. Possibly by Dollar General would be a good location.
