7-on-7 on fire

The San Benito Greyhounds 7 on 7 football team recently traveled to Calallen for a state qualifying tournament. The team competed against Weslaco #2, winning 53-12, and also defeated Victoria West, 41-21. The team then played against Gregory Portland in the third game in the pool “C” bracket and lost in final two minutes by a score of 47-42. The team made up a two-touchdown deficit vs. GP within the last 10 minutes of game but ran out of time in the last offensive drive. The ’Hounds ended up with a 2-1 record and just missed making semifinals for the tourney. The 7 on 7 Hounds are competing to qualify for the state tournament to be televised on the Fox Sports Southwest station from July 19-20 at College Station. The team is made up of the upcoming 2012 Greyhound quarterbacks and receivers along with the defensive squad. The team will next compete at the last chance qualifying tournament of the season at Mission Veterans on June 30. The team is coached and managed by Rene Chavez and JD Rangel. (Courtesy photo)
