The San Benito Lady ’Hounds have known success very well and have only flirted with defeat this season.
Last night the Lady ’Hounds had a bit of a fright in Harlingen, albeit winning 12-6.
Game two of their series against the Harlingen Lady Cards was bad on the heart. The heart of Lady ’Hound Head Coach Elias Martinez that is. But the heart of the Lady ’Hounds gave them another week of softball and saved Martinez a doctor’s visit.
Harlingen packed up their big bats from the night before and brought them to San Benito. The Lady ’Hounds trailed early on but came back. Going into the top of the second San Benito was down by three runs when the team rallied passed the Lady Cards, scoring six runs.
Once again the Lady ’Hounds defense wasn’t its usual shut out self seen all season long, and the Lady Cards’ answered back with one run in the fourth inning and a two run homer in the fifth. The errors the Lady ’Hounds made on defense were made up for by their offense. Although there weren’t many big hits there was the right kind of hits – the hits that moved runners over and helped the Lady ’Hounds score an overall nine runs.
The Lady Cards had the Lady ’Hounds all shook up as their big lead was decreased to a one run lead in the seventh. The Lady ’Hounds came together and were able to pull off the victory that captured their Bi-District title with a final score of 9-8.
“It’s a good thing I took my blood pressure medicine (because) these girls almost gave me a heart attack today,” Martinez joked.
Martinez credits the Lady ’Hounds’ passion and heart for giving them a shot at yet another area championship.
“Things didn’t start out well for us, but we made it through with their heart and passion. You can’t measure the heart of a champion. They hung tough and never quit and I couldn’t be prouder. I’m honored to be able to be with these girls,” said Martinez.
Senior Amanda Garza stayed calm and collected throughout the game and didn’t scare easy. “I had a feeling we were going to pull through. We’re a strong team and we have a lot of faith in each other,” said Garza.
The Lady ’Hounds will be facing the winner of the McAllen Nikki Rowe and Eagle Pass Winn game, both of whom are tied in their best of three series and are set to play Monday.
