Some things change, some stay the same. The first time the San Benito Lady ‘Hounds faced the Harlingen Lady ‘Cards was in preseason, when they blew Harlingen away 10-0. This time it was postseason and the only similarity was their ongoing rivalry.
San Benito took the field in Harlingen Friday night in full force and grounded their opponents until the bottom of the fourth, when the resilient Lady ‘Cards started a rally when Harlingen’s Krista Leal soared a pitch way over centerfield off of freshman ace Amber Jasso, bringing in two runs.
In this the first game of the bi-district playoffs, fourth place Harlingen continued to take advantage of unusual errors made by the District 32-5A champion Lady ‘Hounds defense, which has been solid this season. The Lady ‘Hounds were able to force the Lady ‘Cards to use three pitchers to try and clip the Lady ‘Hounds.
After seven innings of play the Lady ‘Hounds claimed the first win of the best of three game series that continued today in San Benito at 2 p.m.
Although the win wasn’t as pretty as San Benito Head Coach Elias Martinez wished it would be it gave the Lady ‘Hounds a lead in the series.
“It’s a win. Now we got to go back and take care of business,” said Martinez.
As of 3:30 p.m., San Benito was up 7-3 at the bottom of the fourth inning.
