Expenditure reports turned in for the duration of March 14-April 14 showed that there were some big spenders in the San Benito CISD School Board election.
The expenditure reports show the amount of money each candidate received in contributions, who contributed to the candidates’ campaign, the amount of money spent on the campaign, and what the money was used for.
Place 4 incumbent Joe G. Gonzalez has spent the most for his campaign to maintain his seat on the San Benito CISD school board. According to the expenditure reports, Gonzalez spent approximately $3,724.24. He was also the candidate to receive the most contributions, reeling in approximately $3,875.
Gonzalez’ highest contributors were Norman Jolly, Linebarger, Goggan, Blair, Sampson LLP, and Bob Treviño INS; each contributed $1,000. According to the report, a good majority of his contributions were spent on advertising with the San Benito News and purchasing political signs with MJ Screen Printing.
Gonzalez’ opponent in the Pl. 4 race, June Aguilera, received and spent $1,864.07 in contributions. She listed all of her contributions coming from her father, Jesus “Chuy” Aguilera, Jr. of Chuy’s Custom Sports as well as the sum of that money being spent at her father’s shop.
School Board President Oscar Medrano received the second most contributions and had the second highest expenditure report. Medrano received $3,250 in political contributions, and spent approximately $2,717. Medrano’s highest contributors were also Norman Jolly, Linebarger, Goggan, Blair, Sampson LLP, and Bob Treviño INS; with Jolly contributing $1,000 and the others contributing $500 each.
Medrano’s opponent, Fatima Huerta, reported $850 in contributions, $500 coming from Alex Garcia. According to the report, Huerta also received a loan of approximately $594.05. Her total amount spent on her campaign was $1,444.05 at Chuy’s Custom Sports.
Fatima’s brother, Juan Jose Julian Huerta, turned in a nearly identical expenditure report. Like Fatima, he received $850 in contributions, received a loan of $594.05, and spent $1,444.05 on advertising expenses at Chuy’s Custom Sports. Julian Huerta’s highest contributor was Mary F. Gonzalez, who gave $500 to his campaign.
Julian Huerta’s opponent is Pl. 7 incumbent Manuel “Meme” Gonzales, Jr., who received $2,175 in contributions. Gonzales’ highest contributors were Roberto Garcia, who contributed $600, and Linebarger, Goggan, Blair, Sampson LLP, Fred Garza, and Mr. and Mrs. Andrew George each contributed $500.
Gonzales’ total expenditures were $1,724.69. He spent $600 at MJ Screen Printing and $320.69 at Joe King on advertising expenses.
Early voting will be held from May 2-10; Election Day is scheduled for May 14.
