HOUSTON – JoAnn Herrera made a name for herself in the Valley as a dominant pitcher for the San Benito Lady ’Hounds softball team.
Upon graduation, the four-year starting letterman embarked on a new journey as she earned a scholarship to pitch for Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas.
Herrera along with the Texas Southern Lady Tigers softball teamed captured the SWAC conference title ending the season with a conference record of 14-3. Herrera continued her dominance in the world of softball even in a new city as well as playing throughout the country.
Although accolades are nothing new for Herrera, she’s now being recognized nationally for her contributions to the Lady Tigers.
In her college freshman year, Herrera is ranked 40th in the nation among saves for a college pitcher. Her average in saves is at 2.0. Herrera will be traveling with the Lady Tigers to Irondale, Alabama where they will compete in the SWAC Championship Tournament, May 5-8.
Herrera is a 2010 San Benito High School graduate and is the daughter of Tomas and Mary Herrera.
As far as the Lady Tigers’ success, the team is ranked ninth among all NCAA Division I softball programs with a .340 batting average. TSU is fourth in triples per game (0.4), eighth in stolen bases per game (2.26), 31st in scoring (5.86) and 43rd in slugging percentage (.260).
