The San Benito CISD Place 6 School Board race is going to be an interesting one.

Incumbent Oscar Medrano, who currently serves on the board as its president, is looking to maintain his seat while challenger Fatima Huerta looks to bring a new face and new ideas to the board.

Remaining central to this year’s school board elections has been a number of issues, but key to most campaigns has been reaction to the possibility of significant state cuts in education in response to a multi-billion dollar state deficit.

“Of course, I think the major issue right now that all of the districts are dealing is budget cuts,” said Medrano. “We want to make sure that we have everything in place in terms of making sure that we are able to do the things right. We definitely need experience on the board, and that’s what I bring to the table.”

Many in education are uneasy about the possibility of cuts being made, fearing that the result of such cuts will mean layoffs for educators. It is a possibility that has already become reality in some neighboring districts.

“I don’t believe in reduction in force (RIF). I don’t believe in it, but we have to take a proactive approach,” Medrano said. “If a worst case scenario were to be, then we would definitely look at all of our options. But at this point, the option is not there right now to let go of any of our educators. I think we need to keep our teachers.”
