Can smart phones pose a threat to children?

According to a Feb. 7 press release, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott joined State Sen. Kirk Watson in announcing the filing of Senate Bill 407, a legislation that will help curb the practice of sexting.

Sexting, a current phenomenon in which teenage students (mostly) use cell phones to send sexually explicit messages or images to one another has become a trend over the past couple of years.

But what about locally?

When asked about whether or not sexting had become a problem within San Benito schools, San Benito CISD Superintendant of Schools Antonio G. Limón said, “That’s already part of our student discipline code of conduct. It already addresses that, of course not as a criminal act for the fact that the law wasn’t there. We still have steps that we follow. When that happens, I believe that the PRC (Joe Callandret Positive Redirection Center) and different things are called for when it comes to our student code of conduct. As far as it being passed into a law, they have to take steps to curb it so it doesn’t become a bigger problem than it already is.”

While sexting has become popular with many youths across the country, Limón said sexting is uncommon in the San Benito school district.
