On March 3, 2009, former San Benito City Commissioner, businessowner and current Veterans Advisory Board Chair Victor Garza was diagnosed with prostate cancer, charting at number seven out of nine on a Gleason scale. He was 51-years-old at the time.
Today, he is cancer-free and making the most of it.
“Currently I am still under physicians’ care,” said Garza. “Follow-ups are every three months for the next two years, then after that they will be a little more spaced out. So far I’m holding my own, so they say … no cancer in the prostate area, the blood tests have come out pretty clean which is what we want.”
On May 11 of 2009, Garza underwent Da Vinci Robotic Prostatectomy Surgery (a groundbreaking procedure at the time) to remove his prostate at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.
“May 11 will be two years (that I have been cancer free),” said Garza. “Time flies. I feel fantastic, I feel great. I’m here at work as much as I can be. I just take care of my medical appointments; you gotta make time for that.”
