San Benito Mayor Jack Garcia announced his candidacy Thursday for the mayoral office in the May city elections.
“I feel it’s important to continue moving San Benito forward,” he said in his announcement.
The mayor was elected Place 2 City Commissioner in 2008 and was later appointed mayor pro-tem. Citing city charter language, which states that the mayor pro-tem may assume the position of mayor should there be a vacancy, the City Commission in April of 2010 appointed Garcia to the post in which he currently holds and now seeks.
Garcia is optimistic about is chances of being elected mayor in the upcoming elections.
“The people in this community are my bosses,” Garcia said. “I have respect for any opponent, but I think that I can assure that, making this commitment, I am going to give 110 percent for the citizens. Based on that, I feel good about my chances. But obviously any opponent I’m going to respect.”

Below is the text from Mayor Jack Garcia’s official announcement:
“I, Jack Garcia, Mayor of the City of San Benito, will be seeking the office of mayor in the upcoming May city elections. As your mayor, I have embraced and worked hard for the citizens of San Benito. I respectfully ask for your support and vote in the upcoming May elections. I feel it’s important to continue moving San Benito forward. Many projects have occurred over the last few years that are clearly visible. As your mayor, it is important to balance the needs of the community with the financial restraint necessary to endure the present economic uncertainty. As mayor, with the help of the city commission, we will help San Benito grow and definitely have a brighter future. My main goal for the city will continue to be concentration on infrastructure projects, service, better quality of life projects, and continue being aggressive and open-minded in luring economic development projects. I will continue to fight for no increase in taxes. I will continue to support and provide needed resources and equipment for city employees. I pledge to keep San Benito prepared for natural disasters such as tropical storms or hurricanes. I pledge to keep the community informed of important city issues, and to be their voice in city government. San Benito has a very special place in my heart, and with the help of my fellow commission members, and city administration, we will strive to make San Benito the best it can be.”
