Ring Around the Sun

A rare occurrence was noted in the area Wednesday afternoon as a defined ring around the sun sparked several phone calls to the offices of the San Benito News. This is an atmospheric condition that happens when high altitude cirrus clouds retract light from the sunshine as a result of ice crystals that make up the clouds. This can sometimes mean that rain is on the way, but it is not a guarantee. According to several references, this phenomenon has been recorded for centuries.
