LOS FRESNOS – Never mind that the space shuttle program is winding down. Nancy Garcia’s career as a teacher is preparing for liftoff.
One step the Los Fresnos resident will bring her another college degree and then she will take one giant leap to the NASA Johnson Space Center Pre-Service Teacher Institute in Houston.
The Education and Training Program graduate from Texas State Technical College (TSTC) Harlingen will be among the first of 16 TSTC graduates to complete a pre-kindergarten through sixth grade interdisciplinary studies Bachelor of Science degree at Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) on May 13. After working as a practice teacher in second grade bilingual classroom at Sam Houston Elementary School in Harlingen this spring, she has begun preparations for the NASA training from July 24-30. The goal will be improving her science, technology, engineering and mathematics capabilities to further the education of her future students and colleagues.
Her goal to become a teacher began as a dream when she worked as an attendance clerk at Porter High School in Brownsville. “I woke up in bed at about 3 a.m. or 4 a.m. one morning. I sat straight up because I was wide awake and I told my husband, ‘I want to go back to school and be a teacher,’” she recalled. “He said, ‘Go ahead and do it.’” Later that day she submitted her resignation.
