Street repair (or in some cases, street disrepair) is quite the hot topic in San Benito.
On Tuesday, September 18, the City of San Benito approved what some considered a somewhat controversial city-wide property tax hike of an additional $.04 per $100 valuation. Revenues generated from the tax increase are said to be used solely for the purpose of repairing city streets.
It’s been said by members of the community as well as elected officials that street repairs are needed long before officials voted to pass the tax. The topic is arguably exhausted. But at least one stone was left unturned until September 24, when the News took to the streets to gain public opinion as to which streets everyday citizens want to see addressed.
Marianne LaBell of San Benito approached this reporter, saying, “Oh, I’ve got one for you.” She exclaimed, “Hidalgo Street. That street is very bumpy. It’s all messed up. There’s even a business on the street, so you’d think they’d fix it up.”
She continued, “I live on that street, and streets on either side have been redone, but not Hidalgo. The street’s full of potholes, and it makes your whole car shake.”
