What began as a proposal to raise the city’s 2012-2013 budget by over $400,000 spiked to $675,583 and was approved by city officials on Tuesday, September 18.
At $10,761,006, this year’s budget is nearly three-quarters of $1 million more than last year’s.
Notable changes, as previously reported by the San Benito News, include a $.50 raise for all city employees, the implementation of more energy efficient procedures, a brand-new stormwater department (an unfunded mandate of the state), the creation of new offices within certain departments and additional expenses for legal fees in the fire, police and city management departments. Extra work for the department of code enforcement, additional funding for the IT department, a three-year plan set to upgrade all of the city’s computers, tens of thousands of dollars in per diem and travel expenses for city officials and an expected loss of $80,000 in revenues generated by the Los Indios Bridge have also been allocated in this year’s budget.
