City awaits complaints to combat mosquitoes

mosquitoThe mosquito population in San Benito hasn’t been out of control, at least that’s according to city officials who said on Monday that they’ve yet to receive complaints from the public.

“We haven’t had a single [mosquito] complaint since February,” said San Benito Code Enforcement Director John Rodriguez.

However, the lurking threat of the mosquito-borne West Nile virus, which has recently resurfaced in some parts of the state, has heightened caution in some areas.

It is commonly known that mosquitoes need water in order to breed, since they spend their larval and pupae stages in water. In the event of heavy rainfall, there are areas around San Benito in which standing water might accumulate – like large potholes, for instance.
